Work With Us: New Media/Projection Design Intern (Paid)
About us:
Our organization working model: As a group we work in many different capacities—
- We produce, create, and lead our own projects. In these cases, the project is produced by us and led by one or more of our artists. In most cases, we work with presenting entities (presenters, arts organizations, galleries, curators, institutions) to professionally present and share our work with the greater arts community.
- We co-create, co-produce, and partner with arts organizations, companies, and independent artists. Here, we take on one of the major roles in a production, with multiple artists from Chimerik involved in the project to technically and artistically support and see it through to completion.
- We design and collaborate on projects. This is the case where we are hired to do design work and/or creative collaboration work. We are particularly called upon to work with projects that involve New Media/Projection Design for theatre and dance, live visuals for concerts, and various media art related collaborations for live events and multidisciplinary projects.
- We teach, lead workshops, lecture, panels, consultations, and advising work for arts organizations, companies, institutions and independent artists.
- We provide technical and creative solutions, new media support and technical operations. When we work with more established and well funded institutions or corporations, we aim to provide high skill labour. For underserved and underrepresented communities, we aim to provide low fee or in-kind support.
- We provide training and working opportunities to foster the next generation of innovative artists and arts workers. For our upcoming 2023 and 2024 seasons we will be facilitating a new pilot program, a formal paid internship program, where we will foster a small cohort of emerging artists who will be paid to learn New Media and interdisciplinary arts skill sets and tools. We will do this by providing opportunities for shadowing and/or apprenticing on real industry experiences, projects and community engagements.
- We continuously allow space for research, experimentation, learning, and innovation. We either lead or participate in research projects that are not production or result oriented, but to foster new ideas for greater social impact.
With all the scenarios, we try our best to implement our training program, where we involve our intern artists, apprentice, emerging designers and mentees to shadow, assist and learn through real industry experiences and community engagements. Once the artists gain enough experience, they can start taking lead on design and creative projects professionally while still have access to the support from more established artists in the organization. They also get to share and teach their skills and knowledge they have learnt to the next intern/emerging artists, creating a long lasting ripple effect.
Who we are looking for:
As Chimerik is quickly growing we are hoping to add a few more intern artists/designers to our team. We are looking for emerging artists who have an interest in Digital/New Media arts with varying level of experience. As part of our Internship commitment we will share our knowledge and expertise through various tutorials to follow, with hands on experience by working on dance/theatre/interdisciplinary projects. As a company we typically use the software Isadora, an audiovisual/interactive software dedicated to performance environments. Sammy Chien (Chimerik’s AD) is the Official Selected Isadora Software Instructor (the only person in B.C with this qualification). He was directly taught by the creator of Isadora over a decade ago, and carries not only the technical knowledge but the direct lineage of Isadora’s creative philosophy and community-driven spirits. Unlike many other new media communities that present a culture that perpetuates class, gender and race barriers, the Isadora community is healthy, inclusive and diverse, which is alignment with our values as Chimerik.
The work:
As we primarily work project to project, this role will parallel this working model. We aim to be flexible with scheduling as we understand the fluidity needed to work as a freelance artist.
