W(e)aves 熾 0.x by Sammy Chien 簡上翔 (Chimerik似不像)
W(e)aves 熾 0.x is an online digital solidification of 9 phases of research-creation work that investigates migration, transcultural identity, queerness and spiritual philosophies using digital technologies, audiovisuals, text, contemporary dance, and qi-gong. When I discovered that the word “dance” in Oracle bone script 甲骨文 (the earliest origin of Chinese characters over 3000 years ago) is a pictogram of a shaman performing rituals for divination, and the modern form has completely lost its original shape and meaning, I started to question, who gets to erase the meaning of the text and who gets to decide what culture is? Through various research phases, Sammy further develops the relationship between motion tracking/new media programming with Shamanism, hip hop and Ancient Chinese pictograms in the current sociopolitical context.
